Well, my Contender 31’ Fisharound finally arrived today in San Diego after the long ride into town on the back of a flatbed truck from Miami, FL. Barry Brightenburg down at Sundance said the boat looked to be in good shape, but they would inspect it as soon as it was cut out of its plastic shipping cocoon. I am as excited as an expectant father and can’t wait to get Barry’s phone call to let me know the boat has been delivered to Saltwater Specialties in Costa Mesa.

Tom Rogers at Saltwater Specialties will be doing all of the tower and custom fiberglass fabrication, along with the electronics rigging. Tom is a tremendous fabricator, and has been an invaluable consultant since we first talked about the Contender project back at the Fred Hall show in March. I am very excited to have him taking the lead on all the tower and electronics work. His role is critical to the success and outcome of the final product, due to the heavy load of custom work I have specified. Tom is an extremely talented part of the team with a very large backlog of successful tower and rigging projects on custom high-end boats!

Simrad electronics will be supplying the complete, networked electronics package for the new Contender. This will include a very sophisticated, state-of-the-art suite of products including radar, bottom machine (with Airmar-supplied transducers), 3D-plotter, auto pilot, digital gauges, radios, safety equipment and other electronic goodies. I will have 10” screens in the tower and lower station with complete remote functions available from any location on the boat, through a small handheld device. This is all cutting-edge stuff which is brand new on the market and will be completely factory supported and commissioned aboard the boat after installation. I live by my plotter and sonar and I’m very excited to use the Simrad gear when fishing offshore!

Our targeted completion date is the first of July, and we are hoping to be doing our shake-down trips early in the month. We have a number of other manufacturers supplying their latest gear for this project and I’ll be talking more about the specifics as we move along towards completion.

I’d like to give a special thanks to Anthony Hsieh for giving me the opportunity to get involved with the Contender project and Team Bad Company/Crows Nest Yachts. I am honored to represent the brand. I’d also like to thank Barry Brightenburg, Rod Halperin and all my Team Bad Company compatriots for their help and support of this project. I am beside myself with anticipation to get this boat in the water and start catching fish!

Dara, Zane and I will be down at Saltwater Specialties this afternoon to see the new rig. Stand by for further updates…
