Stuck it out For a Couple Fish
Headed over to the island Friday evening for the WON seabass tourney. We left Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro about 6 p.m., picked up a couple scoops of squid and a scoop of mixed 'dines and anchovy from San Pedro Bait Company, and crossed the channel in light to moderate seas.
Got to the island just after dark, and set up at Starlight for the night. We had lots of mixed fin bait come under the lights, including anchovy, sardine, spanish and green mackerel. Even had a couple flying fish, but no squid floated that night.
Not much current, and we didn't catch anything that night except a bat ray.
Around sun up we pulled out of there and headed West. There had been a report of fish around Johnson's Rock, and the cluster of boats there encouraged us to look elswhere. We worked around back and set up around the kelp at West Cove. A moderate uphill current had our hopes up, but after a couple hours and a couple dozen calicos it was time to move on.
We worked East down the back side, taking a look at a number of spots until it was time to pull into Cat Harbor and check in with the tournament. They let us go around 2 p.m., and we made a couple drifts inside Cat harbor looking for a quick halibut. We actually saw a nice one swim by, but weren't able to get any, so we continued working our way down the back side.
Dead calm, no current, and generally poor conditions were found all the way down to Ben Weston Point. As we came around, we found a couple spots of breaking fish on the outside that looked like yellowtail, but they were up and down so fast we could not get on them. By the time we got around to Salta Verde, the wind had built to around 20 knots, so we decided to fish the beaches in tight. Nothing doing there either.
just before dark, we picked up more squid from the Long Beach Carnage around Silver Canyon. There were over 40 boats fishing that area, from out deep to in super tight to the island. We decided to take a look at the Church Rock area. As we came around the corner, there were a number of boats, including a couple small skiffs, anchored on the flat right off the East End. That area had some promising sign, so we anchored up for the night. We had a little squid come up under the lights, but not much.

Finally, around 7 a.m. we got the bite we were waiting for, and a trip around the boat and a couple minutes later a nice sea bass came aboard. A little while later we got another good bite, and sea bass number two was aboard, this one was a bit smaller than the first.

We stuck it out another hour or so, but no more action, so we headed West up the front side of the Island, fishing some beaches and other spots until we pulled into Isthmus Harbor for the weigh in and awards. Our big one weighed 38.8 punds on the tournament scale, a nice fish, but the top fish for the event topped 51 pounds. We got a coutesey weigh on the second fish, it went 28 pounds.
We didn't win the tourney, but it always feels good to get a sea bass!
