With the beautiful weather and the cod season winding down, I wanted to make a last local cod trip, so I called Capt. Ron to see if wanted to come along, as we discussed on our recent trip at Mag Bay.  Ron was ready to go, so I met him down at Wild Bill at 0600 AM.  We ran to the spots in flat calm seas, not much life on the way down (birds).  I stopped at the first stock spot for not much.  Hit another stock spot for a couple of reds and some other small junk.

Pulled back on the spot for a third drop, and then only after a few seconds of letting line out, Ron swings and his rod loads up.  It then not only loaded up, but then line starts ripping out.  I laugh and say, way to go Ron, you just hung a yellow or a thresher.

After ten minutes of fighting it pretty clear its going to be a thresher, I was just hoping it wasn’t going to be too big for the little tiny tackle it was on.  Anyway, after about 20 minutes and a little backing down, a 100 lb. class thresher is coming to color.  This was to be Ron’s first thresher and I had so hungry mouths to feed, so we took the fish. (actually ate some for dinner tonight, delicious!).

OK, back to codding.  We hit this spot a couple more times for not much.  Moved into some shallow water stuff and found the reds there.  We ended up with 15 reds, 2 coppers, 2 barber pole, and a starry.  Cleaned up the boat and then headed over to Turks for a beer and a burger.

Thanks for a great trip Ron.

Til next time!
