Go get'em while they're close, you never know how long they will be here.
Weather was great and fish were close so I went out Thursday (7/30) with Kenny Hession and Dara Stotesbury. There were some reports of fish being seen only 12 miles below Dana.We started at 11 miles and found 3 sleepers in the grey. They blew up at 4 boats, but 2 came back up swimming. We got on them good, but no bite.We worked it to the south, west and north for nothing. At about 1000am a passing sword boat put out on channel 65 a feeder spot only 2 miles East of the sleeper spot, go figure, should have worked East! Went in there and immediately found a feeder, got on the hole, but no bite!We beat the spot to death and at about 130pm we got a bite on the stinger, 200 yards, a jump, and then fell off. As soon as that one fell off another fish passes the drop back bait and eats a dead lure. Set him up, 200 yards and several jumps later he too falls off! Saw a couple jumpers the rest of the day, but for no more action. The Dorado started biting around 4pm after the same kelps had been hit by 20 different boats during the day! Beautiful weather all day!
I took a break on Friday and then went back out to the 267 on Saturday with my brother and father. No sleepers this morning, but at 7:50 we get a single jig strike that sticks this time.We get a good release, cool, on the board! There were numerous boats fishing kelps for what sounded like nothing. We come across a small tern bird school and went 1 for 2 on 20lb. Dorado. At about 10am we get another single jig strike, get 8 jumps out of her and then she falls off. At about 1:00pm, the wind comes up and it is the tide. Pat on the Hawk finds a tailer for no bite. The Joker, after fishing albacore on the fly, calls us and asks where the fish are.I give the top and the bottom of the zone.I see them come rolling in at 20 knots. They are on the south edge of the zone and slow down.Zane Stotesbury fishing on the Joker picks up the glasses and immediately picks up a pile of tailers.Pretty sad, I had been glassing all morning.(There is a new sheriff in town!)The Joker has 6 guys on board and they throw a barrage of baits at the fish with antique Tuna Club tackle, but unfortunately can’t come tight on the finicky fish.We idle down swell and find a group of 3, remnants of the pile, and throw our first bait.I luckily get a really good swimming bait and entice a bite. I come tight on the circle hook, and game on. The two other fish come in behind the boat and look around, but we can’t quite entice them to bite. The fish jumps around and then stays up nicely for a quick and easy release. We found a couple more single tailers, but they go down before getting on them. The trailers went 4 miles east before it was all done. We then pounded all the way back up to the numbers, but did not find anymore fish. We turned it for home and saw another tern school at 7 miles from Dana. I threw a marlin rig into it and hung another 20lb. Dorado. Nice way to end a nice day.We ran a total of 4 miles in after leaving the harbor at 7.5 knots. It was very nice on the fuel bill and we were stoked to be on the board after not being able to raise a fish the week before. Go get'em while they're close, you never know how long they will be here.
Good luck!
Jim

"...new sherriff in town." - classic Kingsmill!
Congrats on your 2 fish day Jim. I think we all should have caught a few with that kind of volume in the area. Better moon phase and more bites this weekend! See you on the rip- "Knock Down" |
