Was hoping to get to Catalina again Sunday night for Monday and try to keep my streak alive but the weather gods didn’t look like they where cooperating. Sunday morning I took my son to the beach for awhile and the wind blew up early. Afterwards we went to have sushi at Origami sushi in Artesia (the bomb !!!!) and when I got home I checked the weather reports and it looked like in the afternoon the winds blew up and the forecast wasn’t looking good. Damn !! Didn’t call any of the guys who wanted to go with me as I didn’t think the trip was a go.
Not wanting to give up I continued to check the weather and around 10pm or so it looked like the swell and wind where backing off (per the San Pedro buoy). At midnight it backed off enough for me to take a chance and make a solo run. Boat was hooked up and ready to go just in case so I was off at 12:30am. Launched at Davies and tried to get bait. LBBC guy said they where closed and Nacho was out cold and again no reply from the SPBC. Damn it !!!! Circled around outside the break wall for about an hr before I got a hail back from the LB carnage saying they had squid and where in front of Avalon. Sweet!!!! That’s all I needed to here. Took off for Avalon. First couple miles where a bit bumpy but it wasn’t a bad ride. Made about 15 to 16knts. After that it mellowed off big time and I managed 18 to 19kts. A couple miles away from the island the wind picked up a bit but just enough to put a slight bump on the water.
Anyway, got my killer scoop of squid from the boys and headed around back to the spot I got them last week and the same spot I gave Paul (Fishinfu) a couple days ago to fish. Got to the spot only to see my buddy Doug on the BG 90 sitting right on it. Didn’t really care as its been a zone thing. I dropped anchor at 4:45am about 100 to 150 yards down the beach from him in 100’. Current was uphill. Set out three rigs and opened a monster and then kicked back and waited for some action. Didn’t take long, in the next 4 hrs I hooked 4 fish and landed two.
First fish landed was a 30 to 35# c-bass that I saw on the meter about 1 minute before it hit the bait (dropper loop on the bottom).

Next I hooked a yellow but the hook pulled on that one (again on the bottom w/ dropper).

Third fish was another 22 to 23# yellow that hit the dropper and landed on the deck. Four fish was a bitter sweat loss. Saw birds working off my bow and then a few minutes later some marks on the meter about 10’ down. Grabbed an extra unrigged rod combo and quickly tied a leadhead on to the 30# mono and pitched it out. Less than a minute later I’m picked up. Set the hook and ZZZZZ!!!!!! It was off to the races. Had the fish on for about 10 minutes. Got it straight up and down and then the line goes slack. Didn’t even have to check the hook on the lead head but I did anyway. Just as I though, #$%^@% hook bent open. Damn it !!! I should have known better but I never had one bend open fishing mono before, just spectra. I know the fish lost was a bigger grade c-bass because to add insult to injury there was a dime size c-bass scale on the tip of the hook point. Probably almost snagged the fish when the hook pulled out. Anyway, that was my last hooked fish. Hung out until around 10:30 to 11am and then headed for the barn happy with the two fish on the deck.
