January 2, 2009 - Leaving the dock at 4:30 A.M. with the plan to make bait on the Gate and then run up to the Finger to avoid boat traffic. Weather is up big time with a low pressure coming through overnight. Got beat up running up to the Gate in the dark and decided to stay there once we made bait due to the poor seas and wind. Finished making 60 or so mackerel and a few zip lock bags of sardine at 8:00 A.M. and moved up to the North end of the bank to look for feeders and get away from the small fleet. Less than 20 boats on the high spot this morning down from over 50 plus boats lately due to the bad weather - perfect!

Anglers were my brother Steve Brackmann and Jaime Gonzales Jr.. Jaime Gonzales Sr. was on the wheel and I was on the leader. The three of us were busy today trying to keep 5 outfits rigged and fishing all the time. The seas were nasty with a short 3 - 4' swell and 10-15 knots. Water temperature is 75 degrees. The fish turned on with the dropping barometer and bait balls of sardine popping everywhere with feeders on all of them. At anytime during the day there were tailers in groups of 3 to 10 fish like fence posts tailing. We were running past the tailers and looking for the seals. Any working group of seals was a sure indication of marlin stacked up below. The bite was sick, with us averaging 10 releases per hour including one additional run to the bait grounds during the day. With the wind, heavy seas and cloud cover we were soaked and shivering all day backing into the seas...if I closed my eyes I would swear I was in So. Cal fishing early season albacore...lol.

We ended pulling in lines at 5:00 P.M. with 91 striped marlin releases for two angler! That puts us at 141 releases in the last two days and 185 over the last 5 days (including a fly fishing day).

We caught another TBF tag in it today. Over the last 5 days fishing that's three fish we have caught with tags - almost 2% of the fish we caught had been previously tagged. Pretty amazing and really shows that catch and release is the way to be.

If anyone is interested in chartering the Caliente, feel free to get a hold of me. The Caliente is a new 2007 40' Cabo rigged to the hilt and powered with MAN 800's. We also offer marlin fly fishing charters for those that are so inclined with our best fly day to date being 4 striper releases in a day. We are located in slip B13 in front of the mall and situated with the Picante fleet boats.

Cheers and Happy 2009!
