Very different format here...
It's a 2 hour time difference from California--so it's 2 am PST and 4am local time here in PV. We are in this tournament today, thought we pass along the interesting format here. 5500 pesos (about 5000 dollars) base entry fee, but the usual 60% or so percent that gets paid out to the winner is not the format in this tournament. Regardless of how many boats are in the tournament (we think there are about 60), the biggest Marlin wins $250,000 pesos (which is less than 25k dollars) plus a base GMC truck as a prize. Also, the daily jackpot is interesting to note--you DO NOT need to enter everyday, so most boats elect to enter just day 2 (3 days tournament Thursday-Saturday). So if your in day 1 and there is no qualifier--the daily jackpot rolls to day 2 and so on. So it's possible that others can win a daily without getting in it--if it rolls. This is so confusing to us, so we got in across the board on the Marlin dailies. There is also dailies on Tuna, Sailfish, and Dorado that we are not in.
Just stating facts here. Shot gun starts at 7am for day 1, day 2 and 3 boats may leave as early as midnight. We had great weather in the crossing over from Cabo, 10 knots at night and picked up and ran (30 plus) for a few hours in the morning.
Our plans is to leave right after the tournament and return to Puerto Los Cabos, come back to PV for the summer. FYI, 60 foot slip here is $1800 dollar for our 60 including Elect and water monthly.
Friday update. Fishing is very slow, locals telling us that it's the slowest season in 20 years. 55 boats in this years tournament, 80 boats last year. So it seems the economic slow down is affecting this area also. The tournament format has great prizes for 4 species. Marlin, Sails, Tuna, and Dorado. Only cash offered on largest marlin at 25k, second gives out a 15 foot whaler boat, largest sail gets a Toyota Truck and largest Tuna gets a compact Toyata car, etc. Daily jackpot is 1k for Marlin and 500 for other catagories.
We were lucky enough to boat a fish today and release a second blue, we ended up winning the daily today and yesterday since it rolled over. Our Blue Marlin weighed 255 lbs, qualifying fish is 100 kilos (222lbs). Only one other Marlin weighed today (it was bigger at 270lbs) but they were not in the daily. We are now in 3rd place overall, a 280 lb Blue was caught on Day 1, but they were also not in the daily. Sometimes it pays to play in the dailies, even though the number of boats is not that high in the dailies--a win is always nice....
Final day 3 tomorrow, weather is perfect and it looks like we are starting to get a little luck. Boats are allowed to leave at midnight, 50 plus mile run to the Banco and beyond to the 1000 fathom line. It was an absolutely beautiful morning, flat calm with full moon and glowing orange sun rise.
Saturday night update. 2 more Marlin were boated today, moving us to 5th place. We did win 2 dailies from Day 1 and 2 worth about 23k. What a great experience, the people of PV are absolutely terrific and very friendly to us as visitors. The town is charming and feels like Cabo some 20 years ago. Boys are taking the Badger back to Cabo at 3am, Ron and Anthony are flying back on Sunday.
We had a wonderful time and had a great experience. PV has some wonderful people with very friendly spirits, we can't wait to be back for summer.
