After a break from fishing for a while, I was desperate for some quality time on the water. With the good weather and decent reports from the island it was time to shake off the lethargy and get back at it. So I took my Tiara hat off and dug the Parker hat out, talked Pete Gray from Let’s Talk Hookup into joining Behdad and I on the first hoop net mission of the season.

Pete Gray - Rum and Coke and a favorite beach - see the buffalo?

The weather was awesome on the way across…flat calm and hot all the way. We got to the Island in plenty of time to dig out the gear, get the hoops all baited, precisely deployed and done by cocktail hour. It was perfect timing as Pete had stopped by Point Loma Seafoods for some killer ceviche, chips and a slab of smoked wahoo. Combined with a gin n tonic or two, the stellar conditions off a favorite West End beach and great company, the trip was already a success…and then we started pullin’!!!

Buff on the bluff!

The first few were a bit disappointing so we rebaited and waited a bit more. By the time we got back at it, they were crawling. It wasn’t wide open, but it was plenty good enough. I had a spread of depths covered and had I had all long ropes for deeper water, we would have been done sooner. But as it was, the final tally by the time the crawl was over stood at 20…one short of full limits. We grabbed a mooring for the night and left out four nets hoping for one more for limits. Before laying down, I sat in the tower for a while enjoying the warm, calm, still night, the brightly lit coastline and the night sky…where are conditions like that during nights on the back during seabass season???

No Deadliest Catch weather for us!

Our last four hoops had no love. But we lucked out in the morning as we found a buddy of mine who was going to be there for a couple more nights and he took pity and donated one of his bugs to help the cause and round out our full limits. We fished a bit trying a catch bass that didn’t want to bite and then headed for home, totally stoked with our limits of lobsters and the fun we had while catching them!!!

They're heeere!

Almost done...

Good Luck and Good Fishing!!!
