Katmai Lodge
We just returned from Katmai Lodge on the Alagnak River in Alaska. We flew into Anchorage and the next morning flew a charter flight about 220 miles and landed on a dirt runway right at the lodge. We spent four days at Katmai- It was a fantastic trip- We fished for salmon on the Alagnak for two days and had very good fishing for silver (coho), pink and chum salmon both fly fishing and conventional spinning tackle. The river is loaded with great scenery and wildlife- bears, eagles, beaver, otter and moose. We also did two trips on Katmai Lodges’ own float plane to two different rivers. One day we fished the American River in Katmai National Monument. We had fantastic fishing on giant Alaskan rainbow trout. The river is loaded with sockeye salmon and the trout come up the river from the lake and feed on the salmon eggs. You drift a egg pattern fly and the hammer it! These big native Alaskan rainbows average 20” in the river and a big fish would be 25” plus and weigh about 8 pounds plus. The are very hard fighting and you must take your time bringing them in or they will break you off. Many seasoned steelhead fishermen say that these rainbows fight harder than steelhead, and I would agree! The next day we took another float plane trip to one of the most famous rainbow rivers in Alaska- the Moraine. We loaded a raft and floated the lower section of the river, stopping at gravel bars and catching huge rainbows and arctic grayling. On both rivers the bear watching was fantastic. My wife Lolly was very intimated by the bears at first, but then realized that they care less about our presence and are totally focused on eating sockeye salmon. This is my third trip to Katmai Lodge and I am already planning our 4th next August- both my wife and I can’t wait to go back.
