Yellowtail and Calicos on the chew
A weekend run to Catalina proved that the spring conditions are over and the island is in full summertime mode. After baiting up with live squid and a tank of sardines, we made the afternoon crossing on Saturday in near perfect conditions. Saturday evening did not produce much for us, nor did Sunday morning. By about 11 a.m. the current picked up a bit and really turned the fish on.
We fished the front side of the island around the Isthmus, and had wide open style bass fishing. With the calico's boiling on chummed sardines, tossing surface iron produced some great visuals with packs of bass chasing after the jig. The fish were good quality, almost all keeper sized, with a couple that were in the solid 4 pound class. Three of us caught around 50-60 fish, releasing most. We managed to hook 1 yellowtail on a live squid, but were fishing a pretty tough neighborhood with lots of rocky bottom and kelp, so the fight did not last long before the yellow found the rocks.
Had several other yellowtail up around the boat, chasing the chum and the iron, but could not get another to go. Nice grade of fish, 20 pound class at least.
Water temps at the island were between 67- 71 degrees, with similar temps in the channel.
